And The Show Has Reached A New Low

Well there you have it. A legal battle involving copyright damages over an iPhone application that makes fake fart noises. Is there any more pathetic expression of the state of entertainment? You would be hard-pressed to find one...

Seriously, I have got to get one of these things. Well, first I need a plant. THEN i get the plant twitter sensor.

I'm The Only Gay Eskimo

Actually, I think the impressions of other artists at the end is what really makes this song so hilarious. Like The Proclaimers would do it!

Wing Bowl '09 -- Obi Wing Wins For Photogenic...

Look, all I have to say is that probably 1 in 3 photos from the wing bowl that make it into the papers/online are of our friend Doug (pictured in this article). He didn't win, or even come that close, but he's a freaking maniac and one of my favorite people on our rugby team.
Best is watching him on the tryouts for the wingbowl, where he apparently eats anything that gets thrown at him, and then calls his super-secret escape plan to exit studio...
Classic stuff...

The Real Fiscal Crisis?

Well hey, you be the judge. It makes sense on the surface, the problem is that he doesn't really talk about *how* we're suppose to reform the system. I think everybody knows the system is f%@ked, just not what we're supposed to do to fix it.

Things That Make You Go: "Huh."

So there you have it. A 16 yr old boy becoming a 16 yr old girl. And a pop star apparently, as well? Speaking as someone who has an opinion on pretty much everything, I'll be the first to admit I have no idea what to say about this. I mean, on the one hand, that's pretty fucked up. On the other hand, if it makes "her" really happy....well hell, most people don't ever find happiness. I say go with it.

High-Speed Trains...The Future?

Really interesting piece on how the future of travel (especially under 500 miles) could be high-speed trains like the bullet train of Japan, TGV of France, or the new high-speed rail links going in throughout Spain.
The article makes a number of very good points. And in fact, i'm with it most of the way (and I love trains, especially fast ones)
The problem is, there is an elephant in the room here and they don't even touch on it. The reason the rail system in the U.S. is not expanding and getting faster is not for lack of support, desire or cash. In fact, most of the expansions of rail systems recently (especially after the recent gas spikes) have seen sustained increases in ridership; most notably in the NE corridor for Amtrak, and in the regional rail and subway lines around the Northeastern U.S.

No, the problem is simply one of land and NIMBY. Everybody loves the idea of more rail, as long as it doesn't go through their back yard, or near enough that they can hear it. And god forbid it should cut through a wetland, forest, grassland, or any other eco-system.

It's tough for many of us because we like the natural balance also, and it's hard to know where to draw the line and allow some of the nature to be swallowed up by our infrastructure. But personally, I'd rather see more rail lines than more highways, and I'd be willing to bet that it's far better for our environment to shift people onto trains rather than highway cars or even buses (assuming the trains are electrically powered).
