the thing about the hot coffee lawsuit is that it wasn't just some jerk who wasn't paying attention. it was a little old lady who complained that the coffee was too hot to drink and that she had hurt herself. she was told, basically, that her opinion didn't matter. it later came out in court that she was just one of about 600 people who had previously made that same complaint to mcdonalds, but the response was that it was such a small percentage of their customer base that it wasn't worth changing their procedure. the old lady just wanted someone to acknowledge that her concerns were valid and that she had a voice.
furthermore, she did not ask for the millions of dollars that were later awarded to her.
i'm not saying that there aren't obscene amounts of absurd and frivolous lawsuits in the US. i'm just saying this particular one has the reputation of being the paragon of this type of thing, and it happens to be an unjust assessment.
